Locations Research - By Jodie O'Neill

Shot one: We have decided to use this residential street with the documentarian driving as it shows that the documentarian is getting involved with the film making and it trying to investigate into the subject matter. This location brings the topic to reality.

We have decided to use this particular location as it is the home of our Tumbr user interviewee. It is a relatable location for everyone, as it makes the interviewee feel comfortable. It also contrasts to the formal location of the social media consultant interview.

This location helps to establish a relationship with the documentarian and interviewee.

The bedroom location is used and is very important as it is were Kira Jones uses the social networking site, Tumblr, for many hours a day. It shows the average location were most Tumblr users are located when they use the website: in the safety of their own homes.

The location helps to reflect the personality of an average Tumblr user, which is a creative individual.

The locations of the driving shots highlights the journey that the documentarian is on to discover the different views of online communities.

The office location reflects the formal style of the social media consultant interview. The location is very professional in contrast to the bedroom of the Tumblr user.

Casting Decisions- By Jodie O'Neill

Our group decided to interview Mr Preston as he is an expert on social networking sites and has a terrific range of knowledge about social online behaviour and understand the Tumblr website in great depth. Preston's role in the documentary is to supply a sustained, critical response on the behaviour that appears on internet communities and how its changes peoples lives both online and offline.
As a group we decided to pick Jodie O'Neill (myself) as the documentarian.  We made this decision as we wanted a young adult to mediate between the contrasting interviews and to represent our target audience. My role is to communicate to the audience what is going on and to ask questions in order to gain a reaction.

Kira Jones' (Anna Ingoldby) role in the documentary is to explain her interests on Tumbr and why she enjoys using the sight. Jones helps to bring an insight to the various cultures on Tumblr and how sometimes these cultures can get out of hand. Anna Ingoldsby was the perfect contestant for the role as she uses Tumblr herself and understands the various online hysterias that appear on Tumblr.

The Topic Of My Documentary- By Jodie O'Neill

As a group we have decided to choose the topic of Internet Culture and how online hysteria is created via the online community of Tumblr. Our documentary will include interviews of a Tumblr user and a critical review of Tumblr from a professional social consultant. The tone of the documentary will be balanced, being that half of it will be serious and focusing on the issues around Tumblr, whereas the other half will be less formal and focusing on the appeal of Tumblr.

This will be an episode from a new series that focuses on "Online Hysteria" and each episode will focus on one social networking site in particular, such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Locations, Subject Matter, Mode and Aesthetics- By Jodie O'Neill

Location Ideas

The formal interview could take place in an office, classroom or private sitting room. These locations would be appropriate as it will reduce distractive sounds and would help to focus the cameras concentration on what is being said.

The informal interview could take place in a park, in the school playground or in a teenage bedroom, in order to reflect the specific age of the interviewee.

Location shots can also be used to show the transformation from one interview to another. Shots of the documentarian travelling could bring a sense of realism and would create an atmosphere of investigation.

Subject Matter

The subject matter of online culture would be interesting to document as there are plenty of different views and opinions available across the spectrum. Also, a political documentary regarding the voting age is also quite controversial.
As a group, we want to pick a topic that is relevant in the modern world and would create further debate and interest after the documentary is over.

Mode

The performative and poetic mode tends to be quite restrictive in terms of the subject matter. A expository and observational mode allows room for debate and argument throughout the documentary. The documentarian could participate in minor areas such as explaining to the audience what is going to be discussed.

Aesthetics

The appearance of the documentary will be attractive in terms of the diverse interviews and the different locations. The arguments over the effects of social networks will cover different viewpoints of opinions. This documentary will appeal to young adults as it will contain fun music and stylistics. Our group wants the documentary to be eye-catching and we will do this by including unusual and entertaining aspects of online culture.

Questionnaire Results - By Jodie O'Neill

As a group, we released a questionnaire in order to find out about different peoples views on documentaries. We asked one hundred people in order to gain a wide range of results.

Question 1
Most people who took part in the questionnaire were males. However, a lot of females also took part too, so our documentary must appeal to both genders.

Question 2
The largest age group who took part were 16-18 year olds. Our documentary must appeal to this age group and be relevant to their interests. The age group of 19-25 year olds also scored highly, so their interests must be considered.

Question 3
The majority of people who took part in the questionnaire said that they watch a documentary once a week. In order to make our documentary professional and interesting, we must compare our layout and stylistics in comparison to current, successful documentaries.

Question 4
Educational and reality documentaries appeared to be the most popular. My documentary will incorporate both sides of these genres.

Question 5
Most people voted expository as their favourite mode. This vote must be an aspect of my final documentary.

Question 6
As a group we discussed the idea of doing a documentary focusing on internet culture. This idea proved to be very popular.

Question 7
The true story of the internet and Big fat gypsy weddings proved to be the most popular documentaries. Perhaps a mixture of educational and reality aspects could be blended together to create a popular documentary.

Question 8
BBC Three was the most circled option. Our documentary must be hosted on this or a similar channel. BBC Three usually hosts a mixture of educational and reality documentaries, which could suit the nature of internet culture.

Question 9
Entertainment and education were what the participants would most likely to see within a documentary. These factors must be part of the final documentary.

Question 10
Television and computers are most widely used to watch documentaries. We must ensure that our documentary is available online, as well as on television. To advertise our documentary we might use a radio advert and a magazine column to gain audience attention, as this is the way most documentaries advertise their show.

Question 11
There was no decisive decision over the gender of the voiceover. Our documentary could contain either a male or female voiceover.

Question 12
As well as using TV advertisements, magazine columns and radio advertisements, our group must use social networking sites to promote our documentary.
