Identifying Signature Documentary Styles - By Jodie O'Neill

Before the end of the summer term, our media class were researching into various signature features of different documentary as well as many stylistic techniques. This helped in relation to deciding on what the particular style of my documentary will be and how to achieve this.

Stylistic Research

Producing a particular style is extremely important as it helps  to establish the documentary, as it creates a polished finish and most importantly engages with the audience. The structure is crucial to the success of the documentary as it has to make sense and portray a meaning. This is what helps make a unique, signature documentary. The selected shots and visuals used on the screen can help or hinder a documentary depending on the choice of footage.

The very basic signature styles include interviews, the film-makers opinions/response and opening titles to introduce a new member of the documentary. More complex stylistics options could be the use of setting to match the subject matter and the use of direct cameras. The choice of costume, properties and sound will also be a conscious decision to make. The selected option will help to make the documentary stand out from the crowd in order to gain interest.  My media group will be able to achieve a unique signature focus by discussing different ideas and mind mapping various options. However, we must ensure that the stylistic shots help to highlight the message we are trying to deliver to the audience.
